There are many places called Suuremõisa in Estonia. Hiiu-Suuremõisa (Dago-Grossenhof) is in Pühalepa municipality in eastern Hiiumaa. It is 6 km from Heltermaa Harbour, 18 km from Kärdla and 16 km from Hiiessaare airport. Hiiu-Suuremõisa is one of the grandest baroque manor complexes in Estonia. Today the manor is home to Hiiumaa Vocational School and Suuremõisa's kindergarten and elementary school.

Land and outbuildings

In the final years of the estate the area of Hiiu-Suuremõisa was 347 km2 and would have covered 44 villages on Hiiumaa. In addition to the main manor there were eight subordinate and herding manors.

As early as the 17th century the manor had an ice house, a windmill, stables, granaries and barns. In the 18th and 19th centuries the old agricultural buildings and outbuildings were renovated and new ones were built. By the beginning of the 20th century the manor was surrounded by 32 regularly placed outbuildings. Nowadays the locations of 27 of these buildings are known. On either side of the manor were two cattle yard-like agricultural buildings. These housed barns, stables, servants’ quarters and workshops.

In front of the manor were two symmetrically placed outbuildings: a barn (which remains partly in ruins but which also been partly rebuilt as a gym) and a carriage house (which has been partly preserved).

You can see the barn (the current gym), the community granary, a large fortress-like barn to the south of the dairy (of which only the foundations remain) and the barn for the fatlings (the preserved foundations next to the distillery).

Also part of the manor complex were the equerry’s house, distillery (which today is in ruins), gardener’s house, ice house, cheese dairy, forgery, house of the field hands (the current shop), girls’ house (the current hotel), inn (in ruins), equipment building, sheds, barns, a cross-threshing barn (since destroyed), the old community granary, a Dutch windmill (in ruins) and greenhouses (destroyed). By the river is the mysterious two-vaulted Ussikelder, while Pavilion Hill (known locally as Pabiljon Hill) between the ponds marks where a rotunda once stood.
